Carnival Tuesday
August, 13
Carnival in Grenada, also known as Spicemas, is a 10-day celebration of the end of slavery that combines parades, pageantry, competitions, displays, great food, and good rum. It takes place in August, about five or six months later than other carnivals around the world. The carnival is the premier cultural event in Grenada and is marked by two days of public holidays on which banks and most shops will be closed. The celebration features a diverse range of events, including J’ouvert (a pre-dawn street party), the traditional masquerade parade, and the Soca and Calypso competitions, Monday Night Mas and the Tuesday afternoon parade of the bands. The event is a compelling expression of Caribbean culture and street theatre through music, dance, entertainment, and cuisine.
